Archer Women Blank Heartland

Goalkeeper Meggin Werner stopped all 12 shots
against her in a 2-0 win over Heartland Community

As the Archers headed to Heartland Community College in Normal, Ill., on Saturday, they had a slide of their own to end, as they had dropped three consecutive contests after opening the season 4-1.

The women stemmed their struggles against Heartland in a 2-0 win on second-half goals from freshman midfielder Katie Foytlin (Belleville East) and freshman forward Brittany Russell (Columbia, Ill.) that occurred four minutes apart. Russell now leads STLCC with eight goals this season.

Freshman goalkeeper Meggin Werner (Mehlville) turned away 10 Heartland shots to earn the shutout. After head coach Juergen Huettner began the season by sharing the goalkeeping duties among his three keepers, Werner has appeared to gain an upper hand. Werner played all 90 minutes in both the win over Heartland as well as last week’s 4-1 loss to St. Charles Community College.

The Archers will continue their road swing this week when they travel to Belleville, Ill., Tuesday (Sept. 27) to take on Lindenwood University-Belleville. They will play at Kaskaskia Community College Wednesday (Sept. 28), before concluding their week at Lake County College on Saturday (Oct. 1).
