The St. Louis Community College men’s soccer team once again was unable to ignite its offense and fell 2-1 to Crowder College on Saturday.

The loss was the second in a row for STLCC, both by one goal. The Archers dropped their game against Southwest Illinois College on Thursday by the same 2-1 score.

Freshman forward Kale Ward (St. Charles) scored the lone goal for the Archers, on a rebound from sophomore forward Joe Woneswith.

“It’s frustrating because it’s the same issue,” STLCC head coach Mike Mayberry said, citing the team’s recent struggles with finishing opportunities near the goal. “You don’t want to upset the whole system because we are getting those opportunities.”

Mayberry did, however, allow that he will look to shuffle the lineup a bit this week in order to create more offense.

Sophomore Ryan Essenpreis (Lebanon, Ill.) and freshman Kevin Cooksey (St. Dominic) shared time in the nets Saturday, with each keeper allowing one goal.

The Archers (3-4 overall, 1-3 Midwest Community College Athletic Conference) will attempt to stem their two-game slide on Tuesday (Sept. 20), when they travel to Cottleville, Mo., to oppose MCCAC opponent St. Charles Community College.

Notes: Saturday’s game was the only contest this weekend for Archers athletics. Volleyball and women’s soccer both had the weekend off.

The Archers were a bit depleted Saturday due to injuries. Freshman forward Tolga Bolen (Turkey) groin) and sophomore defender Andrew Wood (Mehlville) both missed Saturday’s game with groin and back problems, respectively. Sophomore midfielders Joe Tibbles (Seckman) and Greg Stevens (Oakville) were limited in their playing time while nursing injuries.
