Men's soccer ready to open 2011 slate following successful preseason
August 24, 2011
St. Louis Community College head men’s soccer coach Mike Mayberry expected his preseason schedule to be a stiff challenge for his new-look team in 2011. Consider that challenge met.
Following a 5-2 win over Harris-Stowe State University Aug. 20, the Archers completed a perfect 2-0 preseason with a 2-1 victory over Fontbonne University last night.
The STLCC offense was provided by freshman midfielder Andres Amaya (El Salvador), who gave the Archers their first lead early in the second half by forcing home a rebound in the 6-yard box. After Fontbonne tied the game midway through the second half, Amaya struck quickly by tucking the deciding goal in the back of the net just two minutes later.
As for whether the team’s performance against Fontbonne is a sign of things to come is yet to be determined. However, the early returns are promising.
“The (2-0) record doesn’t set us up other than everyone played, and everyone played well,” Mayberry said.
His players seem to share that view. Despite securing both goals for the Archers, Amaya was quick to deflect credit to his teammates.
“It’s the whole team’s goal,” Amaya said. “When someone scores, it’s never one player.”
The Archers’ next competition will be on Saturday, when they travel to Danville Area College for the regular season opener.
“They’re usually a big, physical team and it’s difficult to play at their place,” Mayberry said.
The Archers will host Jefferson College in their home opener Tuesday. The match kicks off at 4 p.m.
