Meramec’s Montage Named Best Overall Two-Year College Newspaper by the MCMA

April 12, 2011

St. Louis Community College-Meramec's student newspaper, the Montage, recently was recognized as the Best Overall Two-Year College Newspaper at the recent Missouri College Media Association’s annual convention and awards ceremony at Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo.

The Montage received first place as the Best Overall Newspaper in the two-year college division, the Sweepstakes Award, a first- place award for Web page, a first-place win for its Summer Survival Guide, and 24 additional staff and individual awards.

The Montage staff competed against several other two-year school newspapers from across the state, including newspapers from the STLCC-Forest Park and the STLCC-Florissant Valley campuses. Entries in the competition were judged for general excellence by members of the Missouri Press Association.

Individual and staff awards received by the Montage staff included first, second and third place for editorial writing, in-depth and investigative reporting, news and sports photography, information graphics, story illustrations, editorial cartoons, page design and multimedia content. Several honorable mentions were also awarded to staff members.

The Montage has consistently won awards for excellence in student journalism at the state and national levels for many years. Recent awards include a Mark of Excellence Award from the Society of Professional Journalists and a Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press.

In addition to this year’s recognition from the Missouri Press Association, the Montage was named the MCMA Best Overall Newspaper seven other times in the two-year school division. It also has claimed MCMA’s annual convention Sweepstakes Award, for most awards won by a single school in one year, 10 times.
