Thomas Baynum has served as president of Coastal Bend College since July 2007. Baynum also served as the chief academic officer of the institution from January 2008 to August 2010, overseeing the transfer and workforce programs, faculty and staff.

During his tenure, key student success performance indicators that drive the college strategic plan have shown dramatic improvement. Specifically, enrollment and contact hour generation increased more than 40 percent from fall 2007 to fall 2010; the number of students completing courses increased 30 percent; successful completion (A, B,C) increased 28.5 percent; the number of students returning has increased 36 percent (fall-to-spring) and 49 percent (fall-to-fall); and, the number of students completing degrees has increased 38 percent. These student performance indicators have helped the college achieve national standing as one of the Gates Foundation Developmental Education Initiative sites and as one of the founding Lumina Foundation Achieving the Dream Leader Colleges.

Previously, Baynum served as vice president of academic affairs at Palo Alto College.

Baynum earned his bachelor’s degree in English and French, and his master’s degree in English education from Wayne (Neb.) State College.
