STLCC Students to Assist with Citywide Greenhouse Gas Inventory Project

January 27, 2011

St. Louis Community College students have an opportunity to participate in honors projects, service learning or internships while developing a citywide greenhouse gas emissions inventory that will serve as the foundation for strategic planning in many areas of city operations.

Through a partnership with HOK and the City of St. Louis, four to five interested STLCC students selected will serve on the Greenhouse Gas Inventory Project Management Team with HOK consultants and city leaders, and will collect the data necessary to build and maintain the inventory.

The alliance will offer students real-world experience with sustainability planning issues such as urban planning, data collection and analysis, modeling, environmental footprint reduction strategies, energy efficiency initiatives and business communication.

Students will be directly involved with building the inventory, which will utilize the Clean Air and Climate Protection software developed by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability with assistance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Association of Clean Air Strategies. It is the premier system used by municipalities to measure greenhouse gas emissions.

Since 2001, more than 1,000 cities worldwide have joined ICLEI and carry out its sustainability efforts with the assistance of ICLEI’s resources. Transferable skills and knowledge gained through this program will be valuable to students interested in careers in a variety of sustainability fields, including energy systems, engineering, design, public administration, construction, business management, economic development and communications.

The planning process is under way, with the initial inventory to be completed by summer 2011. Average student time commitment is 10 hours per week for approximately four months.
