Florissant Valley to Celebrate Contributions of African Americans

Throughout the month of February, several events celebrating African American culture will be held on the Florissant Valley campus at 3400 Pershall Road. All events are free and open to the public.
The theme for Florissant Valley’s 2010 African American Heritage Celebration is "Continuing the March Toward Freedom". The festivities will begin at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3, with a kick-off in the Student Center Multipurpose Room. The event will feature Jeff Forrest, business faculty, as the keynote speaker and musical performance by Crystal Hatcher, Steward Stiles, III and Christina Bell accompanied by Demetrius Hatcher. Hip-Hop, modern and contemporary dance ensemble, Legend Productions will perform and the Spirit of Angela-Kumasi Nankama Aswad Kambeng will entertain the crowd with African dance and drumming. There will be free soul food and giveaways available.
At 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 4, Emmy award-winning storyteller Bobby Norfolk will present "Drums and Music of Africa". Using dynamic movement and vocal effects, Norfolk creates vibrant characters who come to life through imaginative and creative storytelling. His living history programs highlight the African American experience, while his toe-tapping musical shows feature song and live musicians. Mr. Norfolk will perform in the Student Center Multipurpose Room.
At 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, in the Student Center Private Dining Room B, director Ron "G-Whiz" Butts will host a screening of "The Rink". "The Rink" is a documentary about how roller skating evolved from a pastime to passion among St. Louis’ Black population.

The month-long celebration will culminate with a concert tribute to jazz legend, Mae Wheeler, featuring Ms. Wheeler, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 26, in the Terry M. Fischer Theater.
