Florissant Valley Hosts Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration

St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley will host its annual celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 16, in the Terry M. Fischer Theater on campus, 3400 Pershall Road.

The event is sponsored by the college and North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice (NCCU), and will be emceed by Steve Bai, mass communications instructor at Florissant Valley.

Zelema Harris, St. Louis Community College chancellor, will be the keynote speaker for the event. With more than 30 years of experience in education, Harris has served as president of Parkland College in Champaign, Ill., and president of Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley in Kansas City, Mo. Locally, Harris serves on the boards of directors for the United Way of Greater St. Louis, the St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association, Focus St. Louis, the St. Louis Science  Center, the St. Louis Gateway Classic Foundation, the St. Louis Coalition for Information & Communication Technology, The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis and the Missouri Botanical Garden. She is a member of the Missouri Women's Forum, The Links, Inc.-Gateway Chapter, the United Way's Charmaine Chapman Society, the Women's Leadership Giving Initiative and The de Tocqueville Society. Her career can be chronicled by examples of visionary advocacy, a tireless pursuit of social justice and a passion for civic engagement and leadership.

The event also will feature the winners of the annual NCCU oratorical contest, the Florissant Valley College Chorus and other local gospel choirs.
