"Waiting For Godot" Auditions At STLCC-Meramec

November 19, 2010

The Meramec Theatre will conduct auditions for Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, and Wednesday, Dec. 1, in the theatre on campus, 11333 Big Bend Road.

"Waiting for Godot" is a tragicomedy with parts are for four adult males and one boy. It follows two days in the lives of a pair of men who divert themselves while they wait expectantly and unsuccessfully for someone named Godot to arrive. They claim him as an acquaintance but, in fact, hardly know him, admitting that they would not recognize him were they to see him. To occupy themselves, they eat, sleep, converse, argue, sing, play games, exercise, swap hats and contemplate suicide -- anything "to hold the terrible silence at bay." They encounter a brutal man with a weakling slave, and a child comes each day from the unknown Godot to evasively put the big arrival off until tomorrow, creating brilliant, bitter comedy that speaks to the dogged resilience of a man’s spirit in the face of little hope.

The play is directed by Michelle Rebollo, with set design by Darren Thompson. Performance dates are Feb. 16-19 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 20 at 2 p.m.
