STLCC-Florissant Valley to Host Healthy American Summit

November 02, 2010

Health, nutrition and wellness will be the focus of the fifth annual Healthy American Summit slated 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, at St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley.

The summit will be conducted in the Student Center Multipurpose Room on campus, 3400 Pershall Road.

The first half of the summit will feature two renowned speakers highlighting  topics related to nutrition, health and wellness. Melinda Hemmelgarn, registered dietitian who is an “investigative” nutritionist and award-winning journalist, will talk about how media literacy can be a powerful tool in health and nutrition education. Patricia Buck, executive director at the Center for Foodborne Illness, Research & Prevention, will discuss modern-day challenges in food safety.

“We have had from 60 to100 participants each year,” said Darlene Neil, Healthy American Summit event coordinator. “We draw many food and nutrition teachers, dieticians and other health agency staff from both Missouri and Illinois.”

Following the speakers' presentation, attendees can choose from six afternoon breakout sessions on food safety, obesity, autism and celiac diets, yoga and relaxation, exercise, and food and drug interactions.

The summit is co-sponsored by the Continuing Education, Family & Consumer Sciences and Physical Education departments. For more information, contact Neil at 314- 513-4891.
