Forest Park's Lady Highlanders advance to the Region XVI Tournament semifinals and
will face top-seeded St. Charles Community College on Oct. 29.

The Forest Park women’s soccer team, after defeating Meramec 2-1 in the opening round of the Region XVI Tournament on Oct. 23, will face top-seeded St. Charles Community College in the tournament's semifinal round at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at MCC-Blue River in Independence, Mo.

The Meramec match marked the third meeting between the schools this season, with each team earning a 1-0 victory during the regular season. The Lady Highlanders' victory in the regular season meeting gave them a conference win, while Meramec won the regular season match that counted toward the region standings. Meramec's victory earned the Magic the No. 4 seed and the chance to host No. 5 seed Forest Park in the opening round.

The first half was tightly played, with each team having numerous scoring chances. Meramec had a goal called back as the referee ruled that the Lady Highlander goalkeeper, Beth Hatley, had been fouled. The game was scoreless at halftime.

Meramec struck first in the second half, as Magic forward Amy Gaurino snuck behind the defense and scored to give the Magic a 1-0 lead. Forest Park answered back within seconds, as freshman Katie Morris poked a loose ball past the goalkeeper to tie the game 1-1. With 25 minutes left to go, Carrie Stone, the 2009 Co-Region Player of the Year, beat the last defender and calmly netted the game-winning goal for the Lady Highlanders. Hatley made some key saves down the stretch as Forest Park held on for the 2-1 win.

Stone has now scored in all four regional games the Lady Highlanders have played in the past two seasons -- all victories. In 2009, the Lady Highlanders were seeded fourth and won the tournament.

St. Charles and Forest Park met two times in the regular season, with St. Charles winning both games by scores of 2-0.
