David J. Smith, the national educational outreach officer for the United States Institute of Peace, will discuss the mission and activities of the USIP, including high profile activities such as the Iraq Study Group and the role of USIP in global peacebuilding, in a lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, in the Meramec Student Center Commons.

Following prepared remarks, Smith will lead an audience discussion about the work of peacebuilding – defining it and providing examples – and then seek audience input on approaches and strategies that Americans should be using to building peace around the world.

The USIP is an independent, nonpartisan institution established and funded by Congress to increase the nation's capacity to manage international conflict without violence.

Smith coordinates institute-wide educational outreach and public programming efforts, and also works with educational and professional associations, academic institutions and public groups to promote institute objectives. His areas of expertise include civil society and peace building, child soldiers, conflict resolution education and international education.

Admission to the lecture is free. For more information, call 314-984-7995.
