Meramec Theatre Conducts Auditions for "Assassins"

August 23, 2010

The Meramec Theatre announces a call for auditions for "Assassins," a book by John Weidman, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, based on an original idea by Charles Gilbert.
Auditions will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, and Wednesday, Aug. 25, in the Meramec Theatre, 11333 Big Bend Road.

Those auditioning are asked to prepare one song from the show in the appropriate voice range and to bring sheet music in the proper key, deliver a one-minute monologue, and dress for a dance audition.

Scripts are on reserve in the Meramec Library. For more information, call the Box office at 314-984-7562.

Directed by Michelle Rebollo, with set design by Darren Thompson and musical direction by Jerry Myers, performances are slated for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6-9 and for 2 p.m. Oct. 10.

"Assassins," perhaps the most controversial musical ever written, lays bare the lives of nine individuals who assassinated or tried to assassinate the President of the United States. From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, Sondheim and Weidman bend the rules of time and space, taking us on a nightmarish roller-coaster ride in which assassins and would be assassins meet, interact and inspire each other to harrowing acts in the name of the American Dream. The play is for mature audiences only.
