“Green” Gurus Visit New Harrison Center

July 13, 2010

Representatives from the St. Louis chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council participated in a walk-through of St. Louis Community College’s new William J. Harrison Education Center during the organization’s seventh annual Green Building Tour July 13.

The center, a satellite of Forest Park campus, is in the JeffVanderLou neighborhood in north St. Louis City. The 31,000-square-foot facility is scheduled to open for classes in August.

The college has continued its commitment to sustainable construction with this new facility, which will be the first “green” public higher education facility of its kind in St. Louis City. The college is seeking to attain Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification. The Harrison Center will have energy efficient heating and cooling, with heat pumps in offices and classrooms that allow for individual comfort. It also features controllable lighting, the use of recycled materials, low VOC paint, and non-toxic building materials and furnishings.

The new center will offer credit and non-credit courses in environmental sciences, allied health, computers/technology, and workforce training and development. It features an art studio, science and computer labs, five classrooms, multi-purpose community room, bookstore, commons area, outreach center and administrative offices.

The St. Louis chapter of the USGBC holds monthly education programs around the region, showcasing buildings with design and energy features that promote its standards for green building. Future tours will be scheduled after the center opens.
