STLCC-Florissant Valley and Youth For Understanding Seek Host Families

May 26, 2010

St. Louis, Mo., May 26, 2010 - St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley and Youth for Understanding (YFU) are offering area residents the opportunity to host an international student. STLCC-Florissant Valley needs families to open their homes and hearts to an international student arriving in August 2010.

Upon arrival, the students will live with host families within reasonable commuting distance to the college. Students will take part in all aspects of college life, from attending classes to participating in sports and club activities.

Students in need of host families include:

Mikhail, a 17-year old-male is from Moscow, Russia. Mikhail’s first love is music. He plays the guitar, bass guitar, drums, bagpipes and some piano. He plays the bass guitar in a school band. He also likes to sketch. Mikhail has not decided on his future career, but is interested in telecommunications. To educate his host family and community about his country, he plans to cook traditional dishes, describe traditional holiday celebrations and sing famous Russian songs.

Nnecholas, a 20-year-old male, is from Liberia. He is active in a youth group, Family Planning Association Youth Action Movement (YAM). On the weekends, Nnecholas is busy volunteering in his community, helping community residents clean their neighborhoods. One of his hobbies is repairing household appliances such as radios, fans and generators. Nnecholas has strong interests in both computer science and economics.

Host families will provide room, board, love, guidance and the experience of what everyday life is like in America. All kinds of families are selected to host YFU students. Married couples with or without children, single parents, and singles without children as well as families with teenagers are encouraged to participate as hosts. Stipends are available to help offset the costs of hosting.

Interested families are invited to attend an informational session at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, at the Florissant Valley campus, 3400 Pershall Road, St. Louis, MO. The session will be held in room E-154 in the Engineering building.
