Florissant Valley Celebrates Earth Day with 5th Annual Green Fair

March 12, 2010

Florissant Valley will host the 5th annual Green Fair, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 7, 2010. The Green Fair will take place outdoors on the Quad area of the Florissant Valley campus, 3400 Pershall Road in Ferguson. In the event of inclement weather, the Green Fair will take place in the Student Center Multipurpose Room.

STLCC-Florissant Valley’s Green Fair began six years ago to commemorate Earth Day. Since then, the event has grown each year with more participants. The goal of the Green Fair is to make the community aware of the many "green" options available including organic and community gardens, cleaning products, electric vehicles and more. Various companies and organizations in the St. Louis area will come together to conduct demonstrations and provide information about their products and services.

In October 2008, Florissant Valley President, Dr. Marcia Pfeiffer, signed the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) President’s Climate Commitment. This commitment dictates that colleges and universities must exercise leadership in their communities and throughout society by modeling ways to eliminate global warming emissions, and by initiating the development of a comprehensive plan to achieve climate neutrality. The Green Fair is just one of several ways STLCC-Florissant Valley seeks to live up to that commitment.

Scheduled exhibitors for this year’s Green Fair include the Missouri Conservation Department, Alton Market Place, Ferguson Farmer’s Market, La Vista CSA, R Pizza Farm, Sierra Club, Horti-Kids, Enterprise Leasing, Earth Ways Center, and Replenishing the Earth. KCFV, Florissant Valley’s student radio station will broadcast live from the event.

The Green Fair is sponsored by the St. Louis Community College Sustainability Committee.
