Florissant Valley will join the surrounding North St. Louis community in celebrating the life and teachings of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with a special program on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010. This year’s theme is “Realizing the Dream through Civic and Community Engagement”. The event will take place at 3 p.m. in the Terry M. Fischer Theatre on the Florissant Valley campus, 3400 Pershall Road in Ferguson.

Gilberto Pinela, a civic leader and entrepreneur, will be the keynote speaker for the event. Pinela has become dominant in many fields including acting, radio, television and successful business man. In 2001, Pinela used his talk show, “Ahora San Luis” to reach out to the Hispanic and Non-Hispanic communities and display them authentically with interviews and news coverage.

Widely recognized for his master of ceremonies and speaker skills in St. Louis, Pinela has often been selected to present for such organizations as the Food Outreach, Doorways, Safe Connections, Mental Health Association, Hispanic Educational-Cultural Scholarship Fund, United Way Media Seminar, Visitors Commission District Division Council and many more.

Currently, Pinela serves on the Boards of the United Way, Friends of the Zoo, the Missouri Historical Society, Community Partners, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis Convention and Visitor’s Commission Multi-Cultural Committee, Kevin Kline Awards Board, Alumni Association of the FBI and AFTRA as Broadcast  Representative.

The program will feature presentations from the annual NCCU oratorical contest and musical performances by the Olivette Missionary Baptist Church choir and Florissant Valley’s Gospel choir. Dancer Aaron “A-One” Reed will perform a piece to open the program and various works of art by Florissant Valley students will be on display in the theatre lobby. Light refreshments will be served immediately following the program.
Admission is free and seating will be on a first come, first serve basis. Special accommodations are available for persons with disabilities by calling 314-595-2323.
