Two faculty members from STLCC-Meramec will play a vital role in the Missouri Community College Association (MCCA)/ Vietnam Association of Community Colleges (VACC) Conversational English Language Assistant Program (CELAP). In December 2009, Dr. Kay Blalock will travel to Ha Noi, Viet Nam, where she will assist the English language teacher at North Thang Long Engineering and Technical College. Dr. Dirk Voss will travel to Southern Viet Nam where he will volunteer at Ca Mau Community College. Both professors expect to gain new cultural competencies that they can bring back to their STLCC-Meramec classrooms.

As volunteers in the program, professors Blalock and Voss will be responsible for engaging in conversational English with the students as instructed by the Vietnamese community college English instructor. They will begin communicating with the Vietnamese instructors by email approximately one month prior to their departure for Viet Nam in order to prepare. Dr. Blalock will remain in Viet Nam until January 2010. Dr. Voss’ stay will be considerably longer, serving as part of his sabbatical.

CELAP was started in 2008 by Professor Cindy Epperson, STLCC-Meramec, and Dr. Kent Farnsworth, UMSL.In November 2007 the Missouri Community College Association (MCCA) extended an honorary membership to the Vietnam Association of Community Colleges (VACC) who in turn made MCCA an honorary member of VACC in April 2008. On Nov. 7, 2008, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed to begin the Conversational English Language Assistant Program between VACC and MCCA. Viet Nam has thirteen community colleges, with eight of the thirteen colleges participating in the program.
