October 04, 2009
North County CARES will host the 10th annual Community Summit from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23 on the Florissant Valley campus in the Student Center Multipurpose Room, 3400 Pershall Road.
The Community Summit gives community organizations and social service agencies the opportunity to participate in professional development workshops and network with other social service providers.
"This is the milestone year and what we are doing here is significant and relevant to the problems our community is currently facing," said Marsha Bonds, director of North County Cares. "The need for effective social services in our community is at an all time high and the Summit is a chance for professionals to exchange ideas and information."
The summit will begin with a morning plenary entitled, "Minority Health Disparities in Missouri" presented by Brenda Battle, Center for Diversity and Cultural Competence, BJC Healthcare. Participants will select 2 of ten concurrent workshops to attend that help to expose the realities of unemployment, homelessness, foreclosures, the growth of senior population and other social dilemmas facing our world.
After a lunch break, Dan Buck, chief executive officer of St. Patrick’s Center will deliver the keynote address entitled, "The Changing Face of Homelessness". Following the keynote, the Outstanding Community Leadership award will be presented to an individual and an organization displaying outstanding leadership in the community.
Admission is free, but registration is required. Lunch will be provided. Participants are asked to bring a non-food, non-perishable toiletry item such as toothpaste, deodorant, soap or personal hygiene items as a Community Summit Helping Hands donation.
