STLCC-Florissant Valley to Host 4th Annual Healthy American Summit

St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley will host the 4th annual Healthy American Summit, entitled "Sustaining Families: Nutrition, Health and Wellness" from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 30 in the Student Center Multipurpose Room on the Florissant Valley campus, 3400 Pershall Road.

Chef Michael McGreal, Chair of Culinary Arts/Hospitality management at Joliet Junior College and Chef Brigitta McGreal, Chair of Career and Technical Education and Culinary Arts Instructor at Bolingbrook High School will deliver the keynote speech entitled, "Cooking for a Longer Life". The chefs will teach how incorporating healthy foods in daily diets can help reduce the risk of deadly diseases such as cancer, diabetes, obesity and cholesterol. Educational displays and resources will be featured by the American Dietetic Association and the National Association for Education of Young Children.

The Summit will feature a panel presentation entitled "Looking at St. Louis’ Unique Food Culture". The panel will demonstrate how food producers, distributors and media/education are all significant in the Gateway City’s food experience. The panel will also discuss current and new trends taking place in St. Louis regarding the food industry.

After the panel, attendees can choose from eight afternoon breakout sessions on health, financial, and environmental awareness including learning internet safety tips, financial tips, enlivening cooking and environment and making choices that save the environment. Lunch will be provided.

The Healthy America Summit is co-sponsored by Florissant Valley’s Family & Consumer Sciences, Physical Education, Continuing Education, Center for Teaching & Learning, and North County CARES. The deadline to register is Oct. 23, 2009, and the cost of the summit is $40.
