STLCC Boasts 13 Percent Increase in Summer Enrollment

June 25, 2009

Nearly 1,600 additional students have opted to attend classes at St. Louis Community College this summer, representing a 13 percent increase from summer 2008 and the largest leap in summer enrollment in recent years.

Most of the growth comes from students who attend other colleges and universities during the school year and are taking classes at STLCC while home for summer break. This year, almost one-third of the 13,658 students enrolled in credit courses were visiting summer students, an increase of more than 20 percent from summer 2008. In addition, more students who attended STLCC during the school year are taking classes this summer.

Fewer job options for college students, coupled with the chance to earn required credit hours at an economical price, have made STLCC an attractive choice for summer. “Students are seizing an excellent opportunity to make the most of their summer vacations by attending classes at St. Louis Community College,” said Joan Friend, STLCC's director of enrollment management. “Our outstanding faculty, small class sizes and affordability are hard to beat – especially in this economy.”

St. Louis Community College offers associate degrees, with 15 college transfer options and more than 100 career programs, as well as certificates of proficiency and specialization, at its four campuses. With more than 100,000 students enrolled annually in credit courses, continuing education and workforce development programs, STLCC is the largest higher education institution in the metropolitan area and the second largest system in Missouri.
