Gary Gackstatter, assistant professor in the music department at Meramec, was awarded first place in the Drawing/Graphics category at the Webster Groves Art and Air Festival, held June 5-7, 2009. Over 90 artists were selected in this juried competition and awards were given in Painting, Sculpture, Photography and Ceramics, in addition to Drawing.
Along with the recognition he continues to attract for his work as a composer and musician, Gackstatter's award-winning pen and ink artwork has been featured at many one-man shows, museums and festivals. He has received the Kansas Governors Arts Award and was also selected for the 2008 St Louis Art Fair in Clayton. He will participate in the Schlafly Art Outside Festival this fall.
For works such as the one that took first place at the Art & Air Festival, Gackstatter uses crow-quill pens dipped in ink to create his works, often spending as much as 50 to 100 hours on each drawing.
