The St. Louis Community College Board of Trustees at its May 14 meeting appointed Donna Dare, Ph.D., as vice chancellor for academic and student affairs. Dare has served as acting vice chancellor for education since May 2008.

“Donna has both administrative and teaching experience at the postsecondary level, and is familiar with the district’s operations,” said Chancellor Zelema Harris. “She is able to lead diverse staff and student populations, and clearly understands the issues facing the college as well as its directions.”

Dare will serve as the college’s chief academic and student services officer and will be responsible for the overall planning, development, coordination, evaluation and continuous improvement of the college’s academic and student services functions and programs. She will provide districtwide oversight of the college’s curriculum- and student-related policies, processes, systems and records. She also will oversee articulation of courses and programs, assessment of student learning outcomes, and institutional and instructional resources.

“I am committed to community colleges because of the unique and high quality educational experiences they provide,” Dare said. “St. Louis Community College is a nationally renowned community college, and I consider it a privilege to be part of this college and to work with so many outstanding professionals who find innovative ways to serve our diverse community of learners.”

Dare joined the college in June 2005 as the district’s director of career and technical education. She has nine years of experience as a college administrator, including three years as dean of communications, education, humanities and fine arts at Richland Community College. She also has taught at Richland, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and Millikin University.

Dare was selected to attend the League for Innovation in the Community College’s 21st Executive Leadership Institute in December 2008.

Dare earned her doctorate in education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English are from SIU-Carbondale.
