Brian Mueller.

The fifth annual Meet Me at Meramec 5K was a great success, attracting well over 100 participants. This year, Andy Koziatek smashed the previous course record by over a minute, when he ran a 16:15 on the 3.1 mile course, averaging approximately 5:17 per mile. Sparkle Bergin was the overall female winner, finishing in just over 22 minutes.

The Meet Me at Meramec 5K is truly a campus-inspired event. The T-shirt design was submitted by Joe Sanders, an STLCC student who entered the competition set up by the race committee. Jim Ibur’s Clay Club held a pottery competition prior to the race, and student potter Brian Mueller produced beautiful companion pieces, which won in both categories.

In a very competitive field of runners, the following faculty and staff participated in the race: Christy Jaeger, Russell Murray, Roy Day, Toni Oplt, Lisa Wilkinson-Habib, Sharon Holt, Jacqueline Meaders-Booth, Cheryl Rolfe and Claudia Jean Potts. Former college cross country runner, Russell Murray, was the seventh runner overall to cross the finish line and finished second in his age group. Lisa Wilkinson’s three children, Ma’jidah, Amma, & Ahmed competed, as well as her nephew, Ray Hunza, who won his age group. Toni Oplt once again won her age group, and Claudia Jean Potts medalled in her age group.

And many thanks to the following faculty & staff who volunteered their time to raise money for student scholarships, which will be offered through the Alumni Association: Board President Bob Nelson, Lisa Wilkinson-Habib, Gudren Sherman, Trevin Jones, Tim Linder, Kathy Bielicki, Steve Brady, Barbara Altes, Darlene McGee, Kevin Metzler, Lisa Mizes, and the Meramec Police.

The 5K Committee, consisting of Toni Oplt, Linda McGinnis, Christy Jaeger, and Police Chief Paul Banta, helped organize the event, and the race was co-directed by Katy Smith & Juliet Scherer.

We look forward to another successful 5K next year. If you enjoy bragging about our campus and would like to help get the word out about Meramec, please contact Juliet Scherer at 984.7852 to volunteer for next year. Thanks to all of our 2009 volunteers!
