STLCC Offers New Program to Help African-American Males Succeed

April 02, 2009

St. Louis Community College recently kicked off a new program, the African-American Male Initiative “Empowering Student Leaders for the Future” (AAMI).

Last year, the College received a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to help with the improvement of educational outcomes for African-American males.

AAMI seeks to help these students by providing them with access to services available to accommodate their specific needs. Participants and peer mentors of AAMI will be able to earn financial assistance for school.

"I expect them [the students] to be successful in all educational endeavors," said Keith Sayles, AAMI project manager. "We want to look at all aspects to make sure to address internal and off campus restrictions that possibly could prevent them from completing their education."

For the remainder of the spring semester and throughout the summer, AAMI is expected to aid 100 male students. The program will then assist another group of 100 males during the 2009-2010 academic school year.

In the program, participants will engage in specialized orientation activities, peer and community mentoring, tutoring services, special workshops and seminars.

"We have a specific set program, but as the program grows and we get a better idea of the most important student needs, we will certainly adapt" said Sayles.

"We are also interested in developing relationships with community organizations," said Sayles. "We want to make sure that we continue to have on-going services throughout the life of the program."

AAMI is currently recruiting students and will host an informational session at 5 p.m., Thursday, April 9, 2009, in the Student Center Multipurpose Room on the Florissant Valley campus. For more information, contact Keith Sayles at 314-513-4917 or via e-mail to ksayles@my.stlcc.edu
