STLCC-Florissant Valley’s Student Newspaper to Celebrate 35th Anniversary

October 06, 2008

St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley’s student newspaper, The Forum, will celebrate its 35 year anniversary at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, in the Student Center-Private Dining Room C on the Florissant Valley campus at 3400 Pershall Road, St. Louis, MO 63135.

"The Forum not only serves as an information source for and by the students, but also gives those students interested in pursuing a career in journalism valuable experience," said Renee Thomas-Woods, faculty sponsor of The Forum. "We are so proud to acknowledge everyone who has helped to make The Forum the success it is."

Faculty, staff, current and former student employees will attend this event to commemorate 35 years of The Forum’s well-rounded perspective of campus news. The program will include a welcome by Marcia Pfeiffer, president of STLCC-Florissant Valley, a video on the history of The Forum and remarks from the current and past editors. Light refreshments will be served.

STLCC-Florissant Valley students first published the Forum Newspaper on Oct. 3, 1973. The purpose was to provide an open forum for the students, faculty and staff to share opinions, information and ideas. The newspaper was preceded by the North Star student newspaper which debuted in November 1963 as the first student newspaper for the St. Louis Community College system.

The Forum has served as a learning lab for many communications students throughout the years. By incorporating students from other academic programs, the publication has exposed a wide range of students to the media and career possibilities in the communications field.

Please join us as we celebrate the past 35 years and look to 35 more. For information on The Forum’s 35th anniversary celebration, contact Renee Thomas-Woods at 314-513-4465.
