STLCC Foundation Honors Seven with Awards at Taste of Class

Seven former students of St. Louis Community College will be honored for their professional and community accomplishments at the Taste of Class, a dinner and auction event Saturday, Sept. 13, at the college’s Forest Park campus.

Sponsored by the St. Louis Community College Foundation Board of Directors and Centene Corp., the Distinguished Alumni Awards will be presented to Mark Birk, vice president of power operations for AmerenUE; Dennis Jenkerson, chief of the St. Louis Fire Department; Daniel Martin, designer/cartoonist who draws the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Weatherbird; Gilberto Pinela, a self-employed television host/entrepreneur; Keith Schildroth, sports desk editor at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch who also is a Florissant City Councilman; JoAnn Shew, psychiatric mental health clinical nurse specialist and psychotherapist for Psychcare Consultants; and Regina Ware,  a middle-school teacher in the Hazelwood School District.

Jim Reh of Centene Corp. is the event chair; David Bertorelli of E2 Solutions is the co-chair. Donn Johnson of the Missouri History Museum will serve as the master of ceremonies. Kim Tucci of The Pasta House Co. will be the auctioneer.

This fundraiser supports STLCC students and programs. The event begins with cocktails at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and a live auction. Chefs and students in the hospitality studies program at Forest Park will prepare a hand-crafted dessert buffet.

The hospitality studies program at Forest Park is the largest two-year degree program in Missouri. Founded by Jack E. Miller more than 40 years ago, the program is regarded as one of the nation’s best hospitality programs. Each semester, more than 600 students are enrolled in culinary arts, hotel and restaurant management, and travel and tourism.

The St. Louis Community College Foundation is focused on creating and fostering community linkages that support and advance the college’s mission of providing excellent educational opportunities for its students and the community by soliciting and administering gifts and funds for college scholarships and programs, capital projects and endowment.
