STLCC Conducts Workshops for Plus 50 Learners

September 08, 2008

Individuals age 50 and older who are nearing retirement, seeking to retool professional skills or a new direction in life will benefit from special workshops offered by St. Louis Community College.

As part of the American Association of Community Colleges’ Plus 50 Initiative, the “Re-hired, Re-inspired, Re-wired: A Workshop” will address concerns of students who see retirement in their futures, but are unsure about how to embark on this next phase of their lives. Offered through the college’s continuing education office in a format for non-degree seeking students, the workshops enable baby boomers to reconnect with interests they may have put aside decades before while raising children and working, set them on the path to learn new skills or brush up on coursework needed to remain in high demand in the work force. Whatever the direction, the workshops will assist in determining the next step through an interactive learning experience with like-minded peers.

The workshop will be offered as follows at these campus locations:

  • Meramec (11333 Big Bend Road in Kirkwood), 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 1-Nov. 5, in Communications South Room 209
  • Forest Park (5600 Oakland Ave. in St. Louis City), 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 1-Nov. 5, in Building G Room 325
  • Wildwood (2645 Generations Drive in Wildwood), 7-8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 2-Nov. 7, in Room 202

The cost is $42.50 per person.

The AACC Plus 50 Initiative is a three-year pilot program designed to identify and support two-year institutions in the creation and expansion of campus programs that engage the plus-50 population in learning; training/re-training programs; and/or volunteer, civic, service activities. STLCC was selected as one of 10 demonstration colleges that will participate in this initiative.
