September 19, 2008

St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley will host the first Healthy Town Fair & Fun Walk, focusing on “Small Steps to a Healthier You,” from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, on the Florissant Valley campus, 3400 Pershall Road, St. Louis, MO 63135.

St. Louis County Executive, Charlie Dooley, Gary Schlansker, president and CEO of YMCA Greater St. Louis,  Dr. Zelema Harris, chancellor of St. Louis Community College and Marcia Pfeiffer, president of St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley will kick the day off, followed by a brief informational session by Department of Health doctors to discuss obesity, hypertension, diabetes and asthma. After the gathering, attendees will participate in a non-competitive walk around Florissant Valley's picturesque campus. Afterwards, there will be a fair with booths promoting healthy lifestyles.

"Many common health ailments can be controlled and often prevented through diet and exercise," said Michael Railey, MD, director of research and medical service for the St. Louis County Department of Health. "This is a chance to bring the community together with the common goal of learning to live healthier lives."

Healthy Town Fair & Fun Walk will provide free and fun activities for the entire family. Local community groups will offer activities such as nutrition demonstrations, health screenings and fitness classes. STLCC-Florissant Valley’s student radio station, KCFV 89.5 FM, will broadcast live on site. Members of the St. Louis Rams Cheerleading squad are scheduled to appear. All who attend will be eligible to win prizes.
