A St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley alumnus has vaulted his way on to the United State Olympic track and field team.

Pole vaulter Jeff Hartwig finished second in the event during the recent U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Ore., with a vault of 18 feet, 8-1/4 inches. Derek Miles won the event with a mark of 19-1/4.

Hartwig, 40, will be one of the oldest U.S. squad members when the Olympic Games begin Aug. 8 in Beijing, China.

The St. Louis native set the school record of 16-1 in 1987 -- his only competitive season at Florissant Valley. The mark still exists today. He finished his collegiate career at Arkansas State University.

Hartwig is a five-time U.S. pole vault champion. He also competed in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Ga.
