STLCC Offers Study Abroad Program to Vietnam and Cambodia

April 14, 2008

St. Louis Community College is offering a study abroad opportunity for participants to explore and experience two distinctly different Southeast Asian countries and the variety of cultures that exist there.

The study abroad program to Vietnam and Cambodia will be May 20-June 3. Participants will explore the Vietnamese capital city of Hanoi; travel by train to Sapa; sail on a junk among Ha Long Bay’s 2,000 islands; visit Ho Chi Minh City; explore the Cu Chi tunnels; observe a Cao Dai religious service; and fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia, to tour the world’s largest religious complex, Angkor Wat.

The estimated cost of $2,652 per person includes roundtrip airfare from St. Louis, air flights from Hanoi to Saigon to Siem Reap, airport transfers and group ground transportation, hotel, most meals, entrance fees and sightseeing excursions.

All participants must enroll in a three-credit-hour course, Vietnamese and Cambodian Civilization and Culture, which may be taken for credit or audited. The fee for this course is not included in the estimated cost. STLCC maintenance fees (tuition) are $78 per credit hour for district residents, $103 for other Missouri residents and $138 for out-of-state residents.

The tour leader is Keith Hulsey, assistant professor in English at STLCC-Forest Park, who has lived and traveled throughout Southeast Asia. He recently taught a semester at Vietnam National University. He also speaks Vietnamese, and has volunteered and worked in St. Louis’ Vietnamese community since 1989.
