STLCC's new Wildwood Campus Is Good as Gold

STLCC's Wildwood campus is the largest
community college in the United States to receive
U.S. Green Building Council LEED gold certification.
St. Louis Community College’s environmentally friendly "green" campus in Wildwood, which opened in August 2007, is the largest community college facility in the United States to receive a U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification. 

The LEED green building rating system is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. The gold rating is the second highest ranking obtainable under the LEED system.

The rating is based on incorporation of design and construction features that address site sustainability, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere considerations, materials and resources usage, indoor environmental quality, and innovative design. To achieve gold certification, a building must earn at least 39 points in those six areas. The Wildwood campus applied for 47 points and received 46.

College officials chose to build "green" in an effort to use key resources like energy, water, materials and land more efficiently, as well as create a healthier, more comfortable and more productive work and learning environment for present and future generations.

Wildwood’s sustainable features make the 75,000-square-foot facility 30 percent more energy and water efficient than a typical code-compliant building of its size. Features include

  • T-shaped windows that allow more natural light in, as well as light shelves to reflect light further into rooms.  The lighting system automatically balances to accommodate variations in natural light.
  • Ceiling fans in each room uniformly distribute fresh air, enhance ventilation and reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent.
  • A sedum roof that overcomes the "heat island" effect from the building by reflecting heat from summer sunlight and insulating the building in winter.
  • Parking lot plug-ins for electric cars.
  • East-west solar orientation to fully capitalize on sunlight for heating, cooling and natural light.
  • A one-quarter-acre retention pond landscaped with trees, bushes and native prairie grass.
  • Four cisterns that can capture up to 80,000 gallons of rainwater to be used for irrigation; waterless urinals and drought-resistant landscaping.
  • "Healthy building" elements such as low emissive building materials.
