STLCC-Meramec Accounting Students to Offer Free Tax Preparation Services

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) provides free tax preparation service for approximately two million taxpayers annually.  Each year, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) partners with higher education institutions and community organizations to provide VITA services throughout the United States.

 

This spring will be the sixth tax season for St. Louis Community College-Meramec’s partnership with the IRS in providing free tax preparation services for students, staff, faculty and other members of the community.

 

This tax season, 18 accounting student interns have completed an IRS certification course, and are trained to prepare federal and state income tax returns using commercial tax preparation software.  The students are prepared to complete the U.S. 1040 including Schedules A, B, EIC and R and the following credits: earned income, child and dependent care, education and additional child tax.  They also are able to prepare most state income tax forms as well as e-file returns.  Since the program started, students have prepared more than 1,800 tax returns. 

 

Meramec students will be completing tax returns by appointment only, every Wednesday 1:30-5:30 p.m. through April 9 with the exception of March 12 when the campus will be closed for spring break.  STLCC-Meramec is located at 11333 Big Bend Road.
