February 11, 2008

The St. Louis Community College-Meramec wrestling team won its first-ever Central District Tournament championship Feb. 10 in Chicago, earning five individual championships and qualifying wrestlers in all 10 weight classes for the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament Feb. 22-23 in Rochester, Minn.

Coach Ron Mirikitani, in his 38th season, was named the Central District Coach of the Year.

District champions were Miles Bolin (Ft. Zumwalt West) at 125 pounds, Aaron Senzee (Kearney, Mo.) at 141, Bobby Conn (Marquette) at 157, Deron Winn (Liberty, Mo.) at 184, and Jamelle Jones (Dover, Del.) at 197.  The five individual championships established a school record.

Winn was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler. He pinned the fourth ranked grappler in the nation, Shea Geradot of Harper College, as well as seventh ranked Darrin Olson of Lincoln College en route to the 184-pound title.

Five other Meramec wrestlers finished in the top four of their respective weight classes: Dirk Hurrin (St. Agnes, Va.), second at 174; Kyle Hatchel (Francis Howell North), third at 133; Kyle Foley (Oakville), third at 149; Donald Woods (McCluer North), third at 165; and Jordan Parks (McCluer North), fourth at heavyweight.
