VOLLEYBALL

The Magic Volleyball program continues its rebuilding year under second year head coach Jenell Franken with fresh talent and high hopes. In ’08, the squad went 14-24 despite many close games and matches. One bright spot was the continued outstanding play of middle hitter Nikki Torno (Oakville), who went on to earn Academic All-American status for the second year in a row. The ’08 squad also started the season on fire, going 9-1 in its first 10 matches.

Nicole Cross is one of several new recruits that will form the 2009-10 squad. Cross has impressive numbers from her senior campaign at Lutheran South. She had a 97.71% serve percentage rate out of 175 serves and also led the Lancers with service receives with 346. Her 384 digs were also tops on the team, which finished 22-15.
Caroline Kargus is a 5’8” outside hitter and a ’07 Mehlville High graduate. She averaged just over a kill per game for the panthers. Nicole Hopp brings height to the net as a 5 feet 11 inch middle hitter/outside hitter from Francis Howell North High.  For the Knights, Hopp had a 91% service rate out of 294 serves, along with 112 kills on the season. She also recorded 110 blocks, averaging 1 ½ per game. Her strong play led Howell North to a 22-10 mark.

Heather Gamblin is a 5 feet 3 inch defensive specialist from Bismarck High (MO). She is an outstanding server, with a 98.66 percentage success rate over the course of 224 serves. She was also equally strong for the Indians last season in receiving serves, recording an 84.27 receiving rate through 178 serves received.

Also stepping in is Chelsey Hainen, fresh from the prep ranks at Tipton High (MO). From other parts of Missouri, Alyssa Blinzler joins the Magic via Pierce City High in Wentworth, MO. Blinzler is also a transfer from State Fair College where she was awarded the Women’s Volleyball Scholar-Athlete Award. In 2007, she earned Class 2 All-Region Southwest second team honors.

Kristi Miller is a 5 feet 6 inch defensive specialist/setter from Smith Cotton High.
