Women's Soccer Outlook
Thanks to an infusion of fresh talent, the Magic returned to its winning tradition with an 11-5-1 record. The team fell in the Region XVI championship game 2-1 to Northern Oklahoma Tonkawa. However, the squad netted three All-Region spots with Meghan Thomas (Kennedy), Angie Rich (DuBourg) and Haley Fox (Lindbergh). Thomas also was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-America team.
Coach Jeff Karl's squad returns much of its talent and scoring firepower. Michelle Spencer (Notre Dame), who had scored two goals and an assist through three games, suffered a season-ending knee injury on Sept. 8. She will be back at full strength as a forward. Meghan Thomas, who was the scoring leader with 11 goals and nine assists, also returns to pose a formidable front line.
Augmenting that scoring attack is another returning player, Sarah Sanguinet (Lafayette), who had six goals and eight assists in 2007. Samantha Lang (Notre Dame) also returns to the midfield after scoring five goals and six assists her freshman year. The four scorers should keep opposing defenses on their heels.
In goal, Michelle Smith (Mehlville) is back after splitting time with Fox last fall. Smith, a lanky keeper with great mobility, ranked ninth nationally among goalies with a 0.60 goals-against average.
Lara Menke (Borgia), an All-America candidate last season, and Meghan O’Brien (Sullivan) also return for the Magic.
New players that will add to the strong returning cast include Casey Caldwell, a forward/midfielder coming from Lindbergh High School who possesses strong skills and above-average speed. She had six goals and six assists for the Flyers.
The Magic also added defender Rachel Aubuchon from Affton High, defender Stacy Adair from Hazelwood West, and versatile defender Chelsea Tetrault from Parkway North. Karl describes Tetrault as a "smart, heady player who knows the game." Tetrault can play anywhere in the backfield and has good speed.
Transferring from the University of Missouri-Columbia is Jessica Milligan (Pattonville), who can play forward or defender.
