Women's Basketball Outlook
The Magic battled their way to a 15-16 mark in 2007-08, highlighted by the outstanding play of sophomore forward Michelle Senf (Mehlville), sophomore guard Jonica Booth (Fort Zumwalt South) and freshman guard Capri Savage (Orofino, Ind). All three earned All-Region and All-Conference honors.
Meramec will have four quality players returning this season. Capri Savage returns as constant three-point threat. She scored in double figures most nights, including a 25-point outburst against Forest Park Jan. 30 that included six 3-pointers. Savage also enjoyed a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double performance against Florissant Valley Feb. 6. Savage was the top 3-point shooter on the team, sinking 80 total, at a 43 percent clip. She also averaged 13 points a game. She ranked 11th in the nation in 3-point shooting.
Cynthia Abernathy, a 6-0 center from Wentzville Timberland, also returns. Abernathy was a double threat, both with her inside game and her mid-range jump shot. She averaged eight and a half points and five rebounds per game. Abernathy also was a 78 percent free-throw shooter last season. She netted 17 points against rival North Central Jan. 19 in a 69-43 win
Molly Zehner (Oakville), a talented 5-9 guard, also is back. Zehner, switching from previously being a forward to the shooting guard position, will be a team captain along with Savage. Both will be looked to for scoring. Other guards entering as freshmen and adding depth are Ora Spivey (Hazelwood East), and Deidre Davis (Timberland). New faces include 5-11 forward Aretasha Barry (Hazelwood East), who helped the Spartans advance to the state quarterfinals last year while averaging seven points a game. Barry will maintain a strong inside presence in the paint along with 5'10" Latavia Doss (Francis Howell); Ashton Whitehurst, a 5-7 guard from Francis Howell North who averaged 10 points and three rebounds a game.
Transferring from Webster University is guard Michelle McQueen (Lutheran South), who averaged five points, five rebounds and four steals a game as a high school senior; and guard, Suelin Tang, a 5-9 native of Trinidad who played a year ago at Oklahoma Panhandle State.
