WRESTLING

The Magic once again showed a characteristically strong, successful season in 2008-’09, going 9-3 in dual meets and earning a thirteenth place team finish at nationals. Two grapplers, defending national champion Aaron Senzee (Kearney, MO) at 141 pounds. and T.T. Prayther (S. Carolina) at 125 pounds won All-American honors.

The 2009-’10 version of the Magic is a collection of champions. Returning following redshirt years are 2008 national champions Deron Winn (Liberty, MO) at 184 pounds and Jamelle Jones (Dover, DE) at 197.

Also returning is All-American Prayther, as well as a skilled Craig Chiles (Hillsboro) at 133, Chauncy Smith (Hazelwood Central) will add depth at the 184 slot.

New signees have grappling resumes that would earn them a job anywhere. At 133, Jeremy Goree is a three time Oklahoma state champion from Tulsa with a four year mark of 138-1. Wrestling USA ranked him as the fourth best prep senior in the nation.

Also signed at 133 is local star Tony James from Wentzville Holt High. James is a two time state champion his junior/senior seasons and was ranked as the twentieth best in the nation at his weight.

Transferring from wrestling powerhouse Colby College in Kansas is Jernato Harris, a Cook High, Georgia native. Harris won All-American status at the NJCAA Nationals in ’09, placing seventh at 141. Also signed at 141 is Tyler Holloway from Brookfield, MO where he was a four time state champion. He redshirted at Cal Poly a year ago.

Seth Horner and Alex Rodriguez will complement each other at 149. Horner, out of Perry High in Ohio, is a four time state medalist while Rodriguez, from Washington Union High in California, is ranked seventh at his weight nationally.

John Koepp, a Forney, Texas native who earned second place at the Junior Nationals, will wrestle at 157.         Quinten Haynes, from Waterloo, Iowa, will also compete at 157.

A familiar name enters the 165 pound slot in John Vogt (Ste. Genevieve). Vogt’s two older brothers, Nick and Adam, wrestled for Meramec from 2001-’04. John was a state prep champ in ’09. Also at 165 is Travis Hammon, a transfer from Triton College in Chicago where he won a national NJCAA title in ’07.

Four time state champ Travis Spencer is signed at 174 out of Belfast, Maine. At heavyweight, Chris McMullin enters via Willard, MO where he won three state prep crowns.

Also at heavyweight, a transfer from Central Michigan, Marcel DuBose, should solidify the slot. DuBose is a three time state prep champ and a four time Junior National All-American.
