Men's Soccer Outlook

MEN’S SOCCER

The Magic got off to a strong start and achieved their fourteenth consecutive winning season, racking up an impressive 187-73-23 mark over that span. The squad finished 11-8, ending the season in a double overtime 2-1 loss to East Central in the Region XVI tourney.

Almin Sabotic (Mehlville) and Matt Schildz (DeSmet) were named first team All-Conference (MCCAC) while Ian Porta (Marquette) earned second team recognition.

Seeking their 15th straight winning season and their first Region XVI championship since 2000, the Magic return their top scoring gun in Sabotic. The tall, skilled forward had much four year NCAA interest in him but elected to remain with the Magic. Sabotic buried 13 goals along with 4 assists in ’08. Forward Steve McMahon (Lafayette) also returns as a proven scorer with 7 goals and 3 assists as a freshman.

In the nets, Chris Eason (Lindbergh) is back as a steady goalie with size. Protecting him will be defender             Justin Billmeyer (Gibault). In the midfield, Brett Bozesky (CBC) and Austin Killian (Lindbergh) return.

Complimenting Sabotic among the new signees will be Clint Carder, a DeSoto High grad with record-breaking scoring potential. Carder buried 35 goals along with 20 assists for the Dragons in ’08, winning the scoring title for the greater  St. Louis area. Another marquee signee is midfielder Jake Macker from Kirkwood High who has played for some of the top club teams in the area.

Arriving from a Vianney program that advanced to the state quarterfinals last fall, forward Zane Smugala and midfielder Tim Scheipeter. The duo led the Griffins to a 24-5 mark, while Smugala had 4 goals and 3 assists with a pair of game-winning scores.

Transfer talent entering includes the 6 feet 4 inch back Marc Bowron, a native of Aberdeen, Scotland by way of Belhaven College in Mississippi. Another transfer in the back position is Jimmy Benoist from Lindbergh High via McKendree University.

Arriving also from McKendree by way of South St. Louis soccer power St. Mary’s High is midfielder Joe Riedel. A strong pick up from a quality soccer program, Southwestern Illinois College, Josh Hatraf joins the Magic following his prep career at Oakville.

More defensive help joins in David Humphrey, a back from St. Mary’s. Depth at the goalie position arrives in the form of Mihailo Pantelic from Lindbergh High. Pantelic racked up 7 shutouts for the Flyers with a 1.40 goals against average.
