Men's Baseball Outlook

The Magic battled through an uncharacteristic down year in 2008, compiling a 21-34 record. Season highlights included a four-game sweep of cross-state rival Maple Woods, as well as the play of sophomore shortstop Jon Myers (Fort Zumwalt South). Myers was a preseason National Junior College Athletic Association All-American, a National Player of the Week, and a postseason NJCAA All-American. He transferred to Saint Louis University on a baseball scholarship. Outfielder Dan Harris (Bonne Terre) also enjoyed a spectacular year with 11 home runs, 45 RBIs and a .403 batting average.

KEY RETURNEES: Many pitchers return with a year of experience. Left-handed power pitcher Jason Nicholas (Warrenton) is back with much promise, as is right-hander Andrew Maas (Washington, Mo). Fellow right-hander Kevin Mahler (Mehlville) will be joined by Barry Gregg (Mehlville), Steve Thurmond (Mehlville) and Dallas Tew (Kelly, Mo).

In the outfield, hard-hitting Ryan Humphrey will be back after notching 27 RBIs. Catcher Monty Cooper (Sullivan, Mo.) returns, as does infielders Jeremy Boyce (Cardinal Ritter) and Tom Case (Mehlville).

FRESHMEN: A pair of standouts Jerry Roam and Nick Woodson, signed from perennial baseball power Frances Howell North. Roam, an outfielder, led the Knights to the district championship game while batting .517 with a slugging percentage of .793. Woodson, a first baseman, hit .413 with four triples, two home runs and 23 RBIs. Outfielder Cedric Ingram (McCluer North) also joins the Magic after hitting .313 for the Stars.

A pair of shortstops -- Justin Wilson (St. Charles West) and Stuart Robinson (Rockwood Summit) -- will anchor the middle infield. Robertson hit .417 with a .481 on-base percentage as a senior last season.

On the mound, Brandon Gass (O'Fallon Township) was 4-2 with 30 strikeouts and one save. Dave Williams (Maplewood) may be the best-kept secret in St. Louis high school baseball. In 46 innings pitched, Williams fashioned a 5-1 record with 107 strikeouts and a 0.76 ERA.
