 Dr. Larry Johnson

Dr. Larry D. Johnson, Jr. most recently served as associate dean of academic affairs at Broward College-south campus.

He has led statewide initiatives, such as redesigning developmental education, forming student organizations and addressing achievement gaps with male minority students. Additionally, Dr. Johnson has published articles that center on high impact practices, leveraging instructional technology and performance-based funding.

Beginning as an English and reading instructor at Tallahassee Community College, Dr. Johnson became enamored by the mission of community colleges, not only because of their affordability, but due in fact because community colleges transform lives.

He has worked extensively with faculty and student/academic affairs administrators to evaluate student learning outcomes and build programs that increased student retention, enrollment and completion rates.
In his formative years, Dr. Johnson served in various instructional and leadership capacities. He has served as: instructor, student concerns officer, associate professor, and division chair of arts & sciences and developmental education.

In each level of responsibility, Dr. Johnson has always believed in supporting and building upon the talents of those he supervised. As a result, he was able to implement major initiatives such as leading the development of a redesign of curriculum in developmental English, reading and mathematics, which was supported by a $2.5 million from the Predominantly Black Institutions Title III competitive grant program.

As associate dean of academic affairs at Broward, Dr. Johnson made significant contributions in providing professional development for his faculty and staff. He worked with his faculty to develop a two-day inaugural event, M.F.L.A. (Music, Film, Literature and Art) that allowed students and faculty to present compelling works of research to the campus and community leaders.

Dr. Johnson is extremely active in the higher education learning community as evidenced by his involvement with national conferences such as: the National Association of Staff and Organizational Development, the League for Innovations and The Teaching Professor. He has served as a Board Member for the Florida Developmental Education Association and is the past Vice President of the Georgia Association of Developmental Education. In addition, he is an accreditation peer evaluator for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Dr. Johnson earned a Doctor of Arts degree in Humanities from Clark Atlanta University. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Florida A&M University and a Master of Arts degree in Humanities (Medieval to Baroque Studies) from Florida State University. He is currently pursuing a graduate certificate in Institutional Research in Higher Education.
