Athletic Training
The mission of St. Louis Community College at Forest Park Athletic Training Department is to provide optimal medical care to the student athletes through preventative measures, acute emergency and non-emergency attention, rehabilitative measures, injury/illness management and injury education. Additionally, the Department is to provide individual support and personal attention between the student athlete and medical community in order to ensure highest possible quality medical care.
St. Louis Community College at Forest Park Athletic Training Department works in conjunction with the physicians of Orthopedic and Sports Medicine. After seeing the Athletic Trainer, the student-athlete may be referred to OSM for further evaluation. Often, an athlete can be seen within 24 hours. Facts about Certified Athletic Trainers (A.T.C.s)
All athletic trainers have earned at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Athletic trainers are health care professionals equivalent to physical, occupational, speech, language, and other similar therapists.
Athletic trainers are required to successfully complete courses in various educational areas such as:
- Acute care of injury and illness - Pharmacology
- Assessment of injury and illness - Therapeutic Modalities
- Human Anatomy and Physiology - Nutrition
- Medical Ethics - Kinesiology/biomechanics
- Health care administration - Psychology
Athletic trainers are regulated and licensed health care workers. Athletic trainers' practice acts are regulated by individual state medical boards. In addition, athletic trainers are required to work within the statues governed by the National Athletic Trainers Association.
Athletic trainers are highly qualified health care professionals recognized by the American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics and American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine.
Athletic trainers provide the same or better outcomes in clinical settings as other providers, including physical therapists.
