Telecourses

Telecourses combine video lessons (either televised, streaming video or on videocassette or CD/DVD), related readings and assignments, discussions and examinations. When help is needed, students may contact instructors by phone or e-mail. Special print materials (textbooks, study guides and student manuals) accompany each of the courses. The same credit is given for telecourses as for classes held on campus. Students must be self-disciplined and self-motivated to succeed.

There are two types of telecourses -- Standard and Fast Forward.

Standard Telecourses: These are video-based courses in which lessons are viewed either on KETC/Channel 9 (PBS) or HEC-TV (Higher Education Channel on cable), or through check-out video materials from the campus library (videocassettes, CDs, DVDs). Coordinated with the videos is a required textbook and usually a student study guide or telecourse guide. The courses include required readings, written assignments, quizzes, and on-campus midterm and final examinations. In order for students to know what is expected of them, instructors prepare a Telecourse Student Manual, which contains the course syllabus, instructor contact information, quizzes, assignments and other relevant information. The instructor is available to students by phone or e-mail or by arrangement on campus to discuss the course and answer any questions. A TV and VCR/DVR are standard equipment for Standard Telecourse students.

Fast Forward: These accelerated courses are scheduled the first eight weeks and second eight weeks of the fall and spring semesters. Video lessons are available through check-out at the campus library (videocassettes, CDs, DVDs); some are available via streaming video. A Telecourse Student Manual is prepared by the instructor of each course scheduled. The pace of a Fast Forward course is comparable to one offered during a summer session. Course content and learning requirements are the same as for standard telecourses and TeleWEBcourses. Students need to meet equipment requirements for either a standard telecourse or TeleWEBcourse, depending on the mode of course delivery.
