Adult Education and Literacy

The Office of Continuing Education, St. Louis Community College-Meramec offers the Adult Education and Literacy program funded by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. This program serves the school districts of Affton, Bayless, Kirkwood, Lindbergh, Mehlville-Oakville, Valley Park and Webster Groves. If you are not in one of these districts check the Missouri Adult Education & Literacy website for alternative locations.

***Residents living in the Mehlville attending area***

Upon successful completion of the GED class and GED test, residents of the community served by the Mehlville School District are eligible to receive an honorary degree and will be invited to participate in the high school commencement ceremonies at the end of the year. Contact Mark Catalana for more information. mcatalana@mehlville.k12.mo.us 314-467-5261

The Adult Education and Literacy program will not be accepting new students during the month of June.

This program has two main facets:

The first, Adult Basic Education, offers preparation to take the Missouri Test of High School Equivalence and remedial work in subjects such as mathematics, reading and writing skills.

You can find out more about the Missouri GED program and about taking the GED test on Missouri's GED website.

The second, English as a Second Language, is designed to improve the English language skills of recent immigrants to the United States or other non-native speakers.

Classes are free. Students must be 16 year of age or older. 16 and 17 year olds are required to bring a letter signed by the principal or superintendent of the school they last attended indicating they are no longer enrolled and granting permission to attend Adult Education and Literacy classes.

Effective August 28, 2009, Missouri law requires that 16 year olds seeking admission to an AEL class verify completion of 16 units of high school credit. An official transcript indicating completion of 16 units of high school credit must be furnished at enrollment.
