Adult Education and Literacy
The Office of Continuing Education, St. Louis Community College-Meramec offers the Adult Education and Literacy program funded by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. This program serves the school districts of Affton, Bayless, Kirkwood, Lindbergh, Mehlville-Oakville, St. Louis City, Valley Park and Webster Groves. If you do not live in one of these school districts check the Missouri Adult Education & Literacy website or the list of programs at the bottom of this page for alternative locations.
***Residents living in the Mehlville attending area***
Upon successful completion of the High School Equivalency class and High School Equivalency test, residents of the community served by the Mehlville School District are eligible to receive an honorary degree and will be invited to participate in the high school commencement ceremonies at the end of the year. For more information contact John DeWalle at email@example.com or call 314-467-5261.
The Adult Education and Literacy program does not accept new students in the month of June.
All classes now require a two-day orientation during which class requirements will be discussed and testing assessments will be completed. Completion of the two-day orientation is a requirement for enrollment in the class. See the High School Equivalency Schedule or English as a Second Language Schedule for more information.
This program has two main facets:
The first, Adult Basic Education, offers preparation to take the Missouri Test of High School Equivalence and remedial work in subjects such as mathematics, reading and writing skills.
You can find out more about Missouri's High School Equivalency program and about taking the High School Equivalency test on Missouri's High School Equivalency website.
The second, English as a Second Language, is designed to improve the English language skills of recent immigrants to the United States or other non-native speakers.
Classes are free. Students must be 16 year of age or older. 16 and 17 year olds are required to bring a letter signed by the principal or superintendent of the school they last attended indicating they are no longer enrolled and granting permission to attend Adult Education and Literacy classes.
Effective August 28, 2009, Missouri law requires that 16 year olds seeking admission to an AEL class verify completion of 16 units of high school credit. An official transcript indicating completion of 16 units of high school credit must be furnished at enrollment.
Further, information can be obtained by calling 314-984-7777 or 314-984-7805 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
