Foytlin Named to NJCAA All-Tourney Team
Capping off what has been a haul of postseason awards, Archer sophomore captain Katie Foytlin collected one more this week when she was named to the NJCAA Women’s Soccer All-Tournament Team.
Foytlin, a graduate of Belleville East High School, also was named All-Region XVI and was an All-America nominee this fall.
The sophomore was a key component of a defensive unit that allowed just 1.07 goals per game, including 10 shutouts. Opposing teams were held to just 103 shots on goal in 21 games.
After a freshman year that saw her finish third on the team in scoring with five goals and 17 assists, it was not the initial intent of head coach Juergen Huettner to move the offensive-minded Foytlin to defense.
"We were hoping to play her in the midfield, but we knew that if we needed help with defense, she was our number one choice," Huettner said. "We did that, we fixed the defense, and she was the key component."
Foytlin's performance at the national tournament in Melbourne, Fla., also gained her significant attention from NCAA Division I and Division II programs, including McKendree University and University of Illinois-Springfield.
Foytlin was the only player from a team seeded below sixth in the national tournament to be named to the 12-member all-tournament team. The Archers entered nationals seeded ninth.
"She's going to leave a huge gap behind, but it was good for schools to see just how good of an all-around player she is," Huettner said. "It looks very promising that she will continue her career at the Division I or Division II level next year."
